Merrigan joined Just for Kids Law as a Youth Advocate in September 2022. Her passion for advocacy and children’s rights was a result of her previous career as a primary school teacher and studying law.
She has extensive experience in working with young people including working as an education advocate supporting young people to stay in education appealing permanent exclusions in front of school governing bodies and Independent Review Panels. She has also been a helpline advocate for Coram Voice helping children and young people to have their voices heard to receive their full rights and entitlements in the care system.
In addition, Merrigan has volunteered for Southwark Council as a mentor for youth offenders and as an appropriate adult at Walworth Police Station supporting vulnerable detainees through the police process. She has also provided advocacy support to young people and their families to make police misconduct complaints.
Merrigan prides herself on her ability to create a safe, compassionate space for young people to be seen and heard and to communicate their wishes and feelings. She is passionate about empowering young people to fight injustice and assisting them to amplify their voices.
